Dear All,
Further Notification of Notice of Requirement and Resource Consents applied for by CPWT
On Saturday May 5 2007, The Press published the resource consents and further notice of requirements applied for by CPWT.
There two different sets of applications : one to Ecan and one to Selwyn District Council.
Ecan application
This application seeks resource consents to build a 10 km underground tunnel to replace the original 15 km open canal and 3 km tunnel that was to take water to the Waianiwaniwa Valley reservoir. CPWT has also sought consents to discharge bywash into two further points - The Selwyn River near Hawkins Road and The Hawkins river near Bluff Road.
SDC application
CPW has served a notice of requirement on SDC to designate land for the construction of the 10km long tunnel. They are also withdrawing Notice of Requirement to designate land for the 15 km long open canal and the 3km long tunnel under the Malvern Hills. They have also applied for a resource consent for the construction of wetlands and structure associated with operational bywash and emergency peak discharge at The Selwyn River near Hawkins Road and The Hawkins river near Bluff Road.
There has been much propaganda by CPW about how great this change to the scheme will be for the community. In reality, it changes nothing with regard to loss of water from the river and the downstream environmental effects. It does nothing to alleviate the effects on the people in the valley. Ironically, many of the landowners who will benefit from this change are shareholders whose land would have been affected under the former proposal!
We urge you to make submissions against these further applications.
